The December Report

Written with my very own paws - Mercy the Queen

It has been a very long time since I have written. I have been very busy managing the household of three dogs and three monsters (cats of course). Since this is December, I better pen down my thoughts before the year slips away into eternity. So far, I am glad to report that our little animal farm is doing very well.

Once a while, the old monster, namely Jellicle, eyed at our dog foods. I, the grand matriarch of the Canine Tribe, made sure that the act of thievery never happened. The fat monster (Tabby Boy) is one lazy fella. All he does is to eat and sleep. I really wonder if he is a cat or a pig. Then the youngest of all monsters, who is much loved by Papa and Mama, is Alaska. Like her name, she is cool and even has the audacity to scratch our parents when she is not handled well. She sleeps on the top of the filing cabinet - the place where no monsters dare to violate. She sleeps on Papa's chair and covers it with her furs. She is wanting to be the queen of the house but I am determined not to let her. So far, her goal has not been able to come to pass and it will remain that way as long as I am alive.

Danny the black male species of my canine tribe has been submissive. Once in a while, I have to pin him down and teach him a lesson on obedience. Goodness is never a problem. Being my blood sister, she has a very submissive nature. When I dominate a bone, no one dares to take it away from me. However, Papa may take the bone away at any time. After all, he is the top-dog or pack-leader and so who am I to complain.

Christmas is here and both parents are busy with Christmas drama and other things of the season. Here, I like to share with you a nice picture of what we do during Christmas. Take care now and bow wow wow.! Please have a great Christmas and be sure to go to church.

The War Dogs

Wednesday, August 03, 2011 Posted by revalbertkang

When U.S. President Barack Obama went to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, last week for a highly publicized, but very private meeting with the commando team that killed Osama bin Laden, only one of the 81 members of the super-secret  SEAL DevGru unit was identified by name: Cairo, the war dog.

Cairo, like most canine members of the elite U.S. Navy SEALs, is a Belgian Malinois. The Malinois breed is similar to German shepherds but smaller and more compact, with an adult male weighing in the 30-kilo range.

http://storage.canoe.ca/v1/blogs-prod-photos/6/9/e/6/8/69e685140a3ede35216f4542313f7e9c.jpg?stmp=1305236845

(German shepherds are still used as war dogs by the American military but the lighter, stubbier Malinois is considered better for the tandem parachute jumping and rappelling operations often undertaken by SEAL teams. Labrador retrievers are also favoured by various military organizations around the world.)

Like their human counterparts, the dog SEALs are highly trained, highly skilled, highly motivated special ops experts, able to perform extraordinary military missions by SEa, Air and Land (thus the acronym). The dogs carry out a wide range of specialized duties for the military teams to which they are attached: With a sense of smell 40 times greater than a human’s, the dogs are trained to detect and identify both explosive material and hostile or hiding humans.

The dogs are twice as fast as a fit human, so anyone trying to escape is not likely to outrun Cairo or his buddies.

The dogs, equipped with video cameras, also enter certain danger zones first, allowing their handlers to see what’s ahead before humans follow. As mentioned before, SEAL dogs are even trained parachutists, jumping either in tandem with their handlers or solo, if the jump is into water.

Last year canine parachute instructor Mike Forsythe and his dog Cara  set the world record for highest man dog parachute deployment, jumping from more than 30,100 feet up — the altitude transoceanic passenger jets fly at. Both Forsythe and Cara were wearing oxygen masks and skin protectors for the jump.( Here’s a photo from that jump.)

The dogs are faithful, fearless and ferocious —incredibly frightening and efficient attackers.

When the SEAL DevGru team (usually known by its old designation, Team 6) hit Bin Laden’s Pakistan compound on May 2, Cairo ’s feet would have been four of the first on the ground. And like the human SEALs, Cairo was wearing super-strong, flexible body Armour and outfitted with high-tech equipment that included “doggles” — specially designed and fitted dog googles with night-vision and infrared capability that would even allow Cairo to see human heat forms through concrete walls.

Jim and Glori Slater’s Manitoba hi-tech mom-and-pop business, K9 Storm Inc., has a deserved worldwide  reputation for designing and manufacturing probably the best body Armour available for police and military dogs. Working dogs in 15 countries around the world are currently protected by their K9 Storm body Armour.

http://storage.canoe.ca/v1/blogs-prod-photos/6/b/e/e/1/6bee1574bddace1ef8d4e864270440fb.jpg?stmp=1305237116

Jim Slater was a canine handler on the Winnipeg Police Force when he crafted a Kevlar protective jacket for his own dog, Olaf, in the mid-1990s. Soon Slater was making body Armour for other cop dogs, then the Canadian military and soon the world. The standard K9 Storm vest also has a load-bearing harness system that makes it ideal for tandem rappelling and parachuting.

And then there are the special hi-tech add-ons that made the K9 Storm especially appealing to the U.S. Navy SEALs, who bought four of  K9 Storm Inc.’s top-end Intruder “canine tactical assault suits” last year for $86,000. You can be sure Cairo was wearing one of those four suits when he jumped into bin Laden’s lair. Here’s an explanation of all the K9 Storm Intruder special features:

Just as the Navy SEALS and other elite special forces are the sharp point of the American military machine, so too are their dogs at the top of a canine military hierarchy.

In all, the U.S. military currently has about 2,800 active duty dogs deployed around the world, with roughly 600 now in Afghanistan and Iraq .

In Memoriam: Daddy the Pit Bull

Saturday, July 30, 2011 Posted by revalbertkang

Cesar Millan, all his family and friends, his staff and volunteers, and dog lovers all around the world today will mourn the passing of one of the most loyal, trusting, well-balanced, and influential pit bull ambassadors the world has ever known. Daddy, Cesar’s longtime friend and partner in canine rehabilitation, died peacefully surrounded by family on Friday the 19th of February 201. He was sixteen years old.

He lived each day of those sixteen years happy and fulfilled as Cesar’s right-hand-“man,” helping to shape the behavior of entire generations of dogs by showing them the way to balance. He stood as champion for calm-submissive pit bulls everywhere, and was instrumental in helping to repair their image as violent, savage, uncontrollable beasts. He successfully battled cancer and weathered chemotherapy, and even got the opportunity to present at the 56th Annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards!

His name is now added to that honorable roster of dogs gone by whose influence is still felt today, and which includes some of Cesar’s beloved childhood heroes: "Rin-Tin-Tin." "Lassie." … "Daddy."

He has been immortalized by Dog Whisperer fans in all mediums, from painting, to photographs, to charcoal drawings and papier-mâché sculpture. And, of course, he lives on in his work, reflected in the balance and calm-submission of his protégé Junior, the countless animals to whom he was a positive role model, and in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew him as a calm, sweet, and mellow example of a widely misunderstood breed.

Ten Canine Commandments

Thursday, July 14, 2011 Posted by revalbertkang

1. My life is likely to last ten to fifteen years. Any separation from you will be painful for me. Remember that when you buy me.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me - it's crucial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry at me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your entertainment and your friends. I have only you.

5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice when it's speaking to me.

6. Be aware of however you treat me, I'll never forget it.

7. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hands, but that I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, or I've been out in the sun or in the cold too long, or my heart is getting old and weak.

9. Take care of me when I get old. You too, will grow old.

10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: 'I can't bear to watch it', 'let it happen in my absence' or 'I am tired of you'. Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, I love you.

Another Monster Rescued

Another monster appeared in our backyard. This time, it was a tinier monster than the last one. The last one was of course now known as Alaska. This one did not come with a name and so Daddy just called her 'Mimi'. He said that the first thing he heard from this monster was a tiny meow that sounded like "mi mi".

Mommy was the first who spotted this little monster and she thought that it was just visiting our backyard. After one hour, the little critter was still there and meowing as though looking for her own mommy. Daddy was taking a nap and when he got up, Mom told him about the monster. He opened the back door and caught the frightened animal. For a little creature, Mimi was struggling with all her might. Her little heart was about to jump out of her frail chest.

Mommy opened a can of cat food and scooped some out to serve the monster. Oh, what a monster she was! The way she ate... it was like she had not eaten for ages. Poor little monster! She must be so so hungry. I knew that experience when I was a puppy. However, in the House of Kangs, nobody goes hungry here. Everybody is well-fed and has round belly.

Daddy killed some ticks from the body of this kitten. Then he told Mommy about the critter's eyes, "They are tearing badly".

Our parents then decided that they had to bring this monster to see Dr. Pam who is our Aunt and personal Vet. We like Dr. Pam a lot because she is always so kind to us all. She is also a very good doctor and will definitely be able to help Mimi.

Well, back to the cute little monster, the last time we saw her was when Mommy and Daddy drove her in our family car to visit Dr. Pam.

After a couple of hours, Daddy and Mommy returned. They carried a box and we thought it was holding the monster. Goodness and I were jumping up and down in excitement. When Mommy opened the box, it was not the monster but a pressure cooker. Mine, oh, mine, I got all excited for nothing.

Daddy told me (since I am the eldest and smartest) that according to Dr. Pam, Mimi's eyes were infected and needed treatment. The good doctor had kept the monster for further observation and maybe somebody will adopt this furry monster. If that were to happen, then we will never see Mimi again.

That is all for now. See you folks in my next blog. Take care and woof woof.

Her Majesty, Mercy the Queen

Written with my very own paws - Mercy the Queen

You will notice that in this blog, I have declared my sovereign rule over all the critters in my house. Apart from Dad and Mom, I am the Queen!

I earned this title the hard way - Danny the black puppy had grown up. He is as tall as I am. One day, he was chewing on a bone and I decided that he had enough of chewing, So I took it from him... politely. You see, Dad and Mom had taught us all to be polite with one another - even to the Monsters. (Those who just read my blog - 'monsters' is a euphemism for cats).

Who Is The Queen?
Danny did not want to oblige my politeness. He showed his yellow teeth and curled up his ugly nose. He lowered his head, let out a slow growl that most probably would frighten most critters. His paws were over the bone and his mouth gripped it tight. Before he could even say, 'jumping monkey', I already got the bone in my mouth. I was strong and fast... I mean really fast. For my stout size, most canines would be awe-struck by my speed. Daddy told Mom that I behave like the Hong Kong actor, Sammo Hung. I rather be known as Jackie Chan or Jet Li.

Back to the story about Danny's rebellion - and so I had the bone. As I settled down to chew, I saw a dark figure suddenly flashed beside me. Thanks to my instinctive reflect action - I rolled and was back on my four feet. The next thing I did was to jump on that black figure and went for his jugular. Then I realized that it was my 'brother' - Danny the Rebel. So I did not clamp my jaws hard but gripped him hard enough to let him know who was boss.

Danny was no push-over either and he tried to bite my front paws. This time, he really got me mad and so I pinned him down with my massive weight (not as massive as Sammo Hung's) and gave him a bit of sisterly advice. That advice was in the form of a harder bite to his right front paw.

Woof! Woof! The fight was over because Danny was screaming in pain. Daddy rushed out and this sad case of a canine went screaming and limping all over the front porch. By that time Daddy was checking his paws. After a while, Daddy smiled and said, ' no wound'.

Woof! Woof! I knew it all along that this sissy black canine was very thin-skinned. So, from that day on, Danny keeps his distance whenever I am chewing on anything. He has learned that I am the boss among the critters.

If I were to be a male dog, then I would the King. You have heard of King Tut and so I would be known as King Mercy. However, since I am the feminine version of a king, I am more like Esther the Queen. So, from that day onward, I am known as Mercy the Queen. Ahem, did I hear someone says, "Your majesty"?

Alaska the Bully

The new monster by the name of Alaska thinks that she is the queen of the house. I have been tolerating her for a very long time. If it wasn't for my parents, I would have eaten her for lunch.

Mommy Grace is always the one who seems to notice such aggression by this little feline. She tells Daddy but the kind old man just smiles.

Don't mess with me!
For example, yours truly was taking a half-nap, dreaming of that big bone that Daddy gave to Danny. I was smiling in my dream because I had robbed Danny of his bone and buried it in the a pile of towels. Now the bone was safely in my possession, I was able to sleep contentedly and... suddenly, there a tiny sharp pain on my left ear. Woof! Who attacked me?

Alaska shows her prowess by taking on two of us
To my horror, another sharp pain joined the first and that caused me to jump back. Even with half-closed eyes, I was able to see this furry critter throwing a couple of left hooks. Too small to be Tabby Boy and too white to be Jelicle. It must be Alaska. When both my eyes were wide opened, there it was this fat sloppy monster of a creature, coming at me with more left hooks.

Many scenarios raced through my mind - I could have bitten off her paw; I could have even bitten off her head; I could have eaten her alive and... happily, I stopped my fantasy trip.

Since nobody saw what happened, I rose to my fullest height, with undisturbed dignity and just walked away. Being the real Queen of the House, I was never troubled and will never be troubled by such stupidity. Anyway, a few small scratches with that tiny paw was just great to take away a couple of itch on my ear. Woof! Woof!

Dog Without Eyes Overcomes to Live a Happy Life

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 Posted by revalbertkang

Hi, this is your Dog Blogger, Mercy, again. I have an exceptionally good video to share with you. One of my canine friends, Myron is a blind dog. Despite being born without eyes, this wonderful dog still plays fetch and lives an otherwise happy life. Thank God for such a patient, caring owner and a great message - we can all overcome our obstacles.

Lulu The Hero Pig

Monday, May 02, 2011 Posted by revalbertkang

Hi, here is one of my favorite stories of a fellow pet even though it is not a dog.
Mercy the Dog Blogger

On the morning of 4 August, 1998, Jo Ann Altsman suffered a heart attack while vacationing in the north woods of Presque Isle, Pennsylvania, USA. Alone1, apart from the family dog Bear (who did nothing but bark at Jo Ann after she collapsed and tried to summon help by breaking a bedroom window of the mobile home), she lay on the floor yelling:
Somebody help me! Please help me! Call an ambulance!
Lulu the hero pig who saved Jo Ann
Jo Ann, who had had a heart attack just 18 months earlier, was panic stricken. Another member of the Altsman 'family' was at hand though. LuLu, a housebroken Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pig came to Jo Ann's aid. The pig was bought as a 40th birthday present for the Altsmans' daughter, Jackie, a year earlier. Going whale-watching for her birthday, Jackie asked her parents to babysit LuLu until she returned. It became apparent over the next few months that Jackie didn't really want LuLu, remarking to her parents she'd pick up her new pet:
Next weekend, next weekend.
The Altsmans soon became attached to LuLu, even as the piglet gained weight from a smallish 4 pounds to a more porcine 150. It was lucky however, that Jack and Jo Ann Altsman chose to keep the animal.
The Rescue Pig
LuLu took one look at Jo Ann and after 'crying2' for a moment, crashed through the doggy/piggy door of the mobile home and into the fenced-in yard. Lulu had never left the confines of the yard (except for a walk on a leash), but somehow she managed to push open the gate to get to a nearby road.

Witnesses reported that LuLu would wait until a car approached, then calmly walk out into the road and lay down in front of the oncoming vehicle. Drivers predictably honked and swerved, and one man later confessed to stopping, but being unsure of what the creature was laying in the road he was too afraid of getting out of his car to investigate. When a driver failed to stop, LuLu would return to Jo Ann to check on her, and then leave again to try and summon help. After about forty-five minutes the determined pig finally managed to persuade a young motorist to stop and follow her to the Altsman's mobile home. Entering, the young man called:
Lady, your pig's in distress.
Jo Ann feebly replied:
I'm in distress, too. Please call an ambulance.
The man, who remained anonymous, telephoned the emergency services and paramedics quickly arrived. When LuLu attempted to ride along with Jo Ann to hospital by climbing up into the back of the ambulance, the paramedics had to gently let her know she had done enough for one day. In her rush to get out to find help, LuLu had cut her pot-belly on a sharp edge of the too-small doggy/piggy door. However, this was the only injury she sustained; remarkable considering she lay on a busy highway for lengthy periods of time trying to stop cars.
LuLu's Reward
For her part in saving Jo Ann Altsman's life, LuLu the pig received, along with an incredible amount of local media coverage, what she apparently desired most. Jo Ann assured:
She got a jelly3 doughnut.

1 Her husband, Jack, was fishing on Lake Erie at the time.
2 A pig cries rather like a dog whimpers.
3 Jam.

Dogs With Strange Names

Dogs With Strange Names

A girl was visiting her friend who had acquired two new dogs, and asked her what their names were.

The friend responded by saying that one was named Rolex and one was named Timex.

Her friend said, "Whoever heard of someone naming dogs like that?"

"Helloooooooooooooo," answered the girl. "They're watch dogs!"

Tiger, Lion And Bear Form Unusual Friendship

Tiger, lion and bear form unusual friendship

Baloo the bear, Leo the Lion and Shere Khan the tiger have the most unusual and unlikely friendship between them.

Tiger, lion and bear form unusual friendship

Rescued eight years ago during a police drugs raid in Atlanta, Georgia, the three friends were only cubs at the time and barely two months old.
They had been kept as status symbol pets by the drug barons.
Delivered to the Noah's Ark animal rescue centre in Locust Grove, Georgia, the decision was made to keep the youngsters together.

"We could have separated them, but since they came as a kind of family, the zoo decided to keep them together," said Diane Smith, assistant director of the Noah's Ark zoo.
"To our knowledge, this is the only place where you'll find this combination of animals together, they are our BLT, (bear, lion and tiger).
Living with the zoo's founders for the past eight years, Shere Khan, Baloo and Leo have now moved to a purpose built habitat were the US public can now witness first hand their touching relationship.

"We didn't have the money to move them at first," said DIane.

"Now their habitat is sorted and they have been moved away from the children's zoo areas where the public couldn't really get a good look.

"Now, though, it is possible to see Baloo, who is a 1,000 pound bear, Shere Khan, a 350 pound tiger and Leo, who is also 350 pounds messing around like brothers.

"They are totally oblivious to the fact that in any other circumstance they would not be friends."

Handled by Charles and Jama Hedgecoth, the zoo's owners and founders, the three friendly giants appear to have have no comprehension of their animal differences.

"Baloo and Shere Khan are very close," says DIane.

"That is because they rise early, as Leo being a lion likes to spend most the day sleeping.

"It is wonderful and magical to see a giant American Black Bear put his arm around a Bengal tiger and then to see the tiger nuzzle up to the bear like a domestic cat.

"When Leo wakes up the three of them mess around for most of the day before they settle down to some food."

Surprisingly for three apex predators with the power to kill with a single bite or swipe of their paw, they are very relaxed around each other.

'"They eat, sleep and play together," said Jama Hedgecoth, founder of Noah's Ark zoo.

"As they treat each other as siblings they will lie on top of each other for heat and simply for affection.

"At the moment they are getting used to their new habitat.
"Shere Khan is being quite reticent about the move, but Baloo, the bear is very good at leading him on and making him feel comfortable and safe."

Explaining that the three 'brothers' have always seemed to share a unique bond, Charles Hedgecoth, Jama's husband and fellow founder talks about his role in their upbringing.

"They are obviously not wild animals any more," said Charles.
"Noah's Ark is their home and they could not possibly be separated from each other.

"You just have to remember who you're dealing with when you are with them though.

"It's when you forget that these fellows are wild animals that you get yourself in trouble."

According to DIane Smith, the trio's new habitat cost an estimated £15,000 and had to be constructed carefully, in order to accommodate its occupants.

"The clubhouse had to be very sturdy for the guys, because they all sleep in it together,"

We had to include a creek, because the tiger and the bear both like to be in water."

Dog Found Adrift At Sea - 3 Weeks After Tsunami

Saturday, April 02, 2011 Posted by revalbertkang

It appears almost too good to be true, but a little dog has been found alive and well adrift at sea, an astonishing three weeks after the tsunami that devastated Japan.

Members of the Japan Coast Guard came across the dog on Friday as they were conducting an aerial search of the area.

Against all the odds, the dog appears to have survived by living in a partially submerged house that had been swept out to sea.

Local television showed showed pictures of the dog scampering around the roof of the house before it disappeared inside through a hole in the roof.
This little dog survived against all odds and was discovered by coastguards floating on a raft at sea
This little dog survived against all odds and was discovered by coastguards floating on a raft at sea

Rescuers had hoped to find more tsunami survivors living inside the house but after tearing the roof open, it was found to be empty apart from the dog.

Despite its three weeks at sea, the medium-sized brown dog seemed to be in reasonably good condition considering its ordeal.

The discovery of the dog is a rare glimmer of hope in Japan where thousands of people are believed to have perished in the disaster.

The nation is now gripped by the ongoing nuclear threat posed by the unstable Fukushima plant as workers continue to battle to restore vital cooling systems damaged by the quake.
