How To Tell Whether Your Dogs Are Fighting or Playing

Goodness and I love to play. In the beginning, Daddy and Mommy screamed for us to stop. However, after we sat them down and explained thoroughly that we were just playing, they calmed down. Today, we practice our Doggy Kung Fu sparring without our parents jumping up and down in fear. These adults are easy to train. Bow wow wow.

If you own a couple of dogs and they are like us, fun-loving doggies, then you can relax. However, to those new dog owners, here are a couple of advice.

1. WATCH OUT FOR AGGRESSION
Watch out for any evidence of anger, aggression and fear. Goodness and I may snarl and bark at each other but all these behaviors are just a part of our play. Watch out for blood. If you notice that, then your dogs may not be playing any more. The bites are too deep and they may be hurt.

2. READY TO STEP IN

Since Goodness and I have grown up together, there are moments that we do get a little upset with each others. So being the larger of the two, I can easily dominate my sister by pinning her down. Daddy is able to detect when things get out of paws.  He will always step in when Goodness starts whining after receiving the worse end of the sparring session. In fact, my sister always struggles to be free from my kung-fu grip and hides under the coffee table.

3. STOP IF NECESSARY
Here is something that I hate to tell you. As canines, our friendly sparring session can escalate into a real brawl. It may happen if one party bites a little too deep or painful. Yes, when our play becomes extended, it sometimes becomes very violent. Daddy is a good referee and when he says it is time out, it is time out. None of us wants to mess with Daddy when he is furious. After calming us down, the first thing, Daddy does is to look for injuries. If there were scratches or bite marks, he or Mommy will treat us with special antiseptic cream for animals.

4. MEETING OTHER CANINES
When we first met our cousin, Toffee, there was a slight confrontation. Poor Toffee had never met beautiful canine ladies before and so the moment, he saw us, he went into hiding. We were of course interested in this handsome fellow. We sought him out but he was growling. I managed to calm him down but my sister was very irritated by his growling. She took an aggressive position and almost bit Toffee’s nose off. Even though Toffee was bigger he backed off in a hurry. That conflict brought all the adults running to calm us down. Well, to cut the story short… today, Goodness and Toffee are best of friends.

We canines love to play rough and so please do not be paranoid. As long as we are not hurting each other, you should not worry too much. In fact, you should allow us to meet new friends because like you, we are also sociable creatures. Bow wow wow.

Gentle Mercy loves to sit around or better still, simply lying down flat at our feet. Sporty Goodness loves to jump, run and play ...

Most of the time, Goodness instigates the kung fu sparring... She may lose the game, but not her spirit. Agile Goodness will bounce back soon, perhaps in a couple of hours... and the fight resumes! :)
